Tech Advice Needed from the Experts

I need some serious tech advice.

The station has a chat room. I didn't install it, it was installed three years ago and heavily modified to fit what we wanted. It's an extremely large and complex mix of java and PHP and one of those programs with a gazillion templates so making even a tiny change is like a scavenger hunt.

Up until recently I had a person I trusted and thought was a real friend who would handle the technical end if we needed things tweaked or added or modified. My own fault for allowing myself to rely so heavily on someone else but I really thought this friend was a keeper. Turns out I was wrong after ten years but hey, I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again.

I cannot work with this chat room. It's got buggy things going on I don't know how to fix. I've been fighting for weeks now trying to figure out how to connect with it through Facebook which is something I see all over the net so it's doable. I want to add a stickam space for webcams and I can't even do that.

After getting frustrated to the point of breaking down in tears last night and calling Darkstar to whine about how dense I am and what a shit my 'friend' turned out to be, he came up with a really good idea - change the chat room program.

We're three years behind the latest version and given it's a free program it doesn't have things like login through Facebook or Twitter as a plugin or add on like so many others.

Start over with a new program that I'll be working from day one so I don't have to try and figure out what two code-masters did before me.

So I went looking for chat room programs and there are a billion. Tons. People sure chat a lot.

I need help. I know somewhere out there someone has a functioning chat room that does it all. We don't mind paying for the program if it offers the right features. I'm looking for things like:

Facebook/Twitter login capability
Stickam space capability (or some webcam thing)
Capability to have different rooms with different smileys or security levels. Keep the kids away from the raunchy stuff
Personal messaging
Moderation

I'm not concerned with video chatting. This is purely chat room chatting to go along with the shows on the station.

If anyone has any suggestions or knows of any solid chat room programs that offer what we're looking for, please leave a comment and put this misery to an end. I would be deeply appreciative for the rest of my life and you can be the official KMRL chat room hero!

Help the feeble, it's good karma.

Networking Testing and a Poll for Listeners!

We're trying something new here. If I've managed to make the trains run when I post this it will hit the networked blogs so people following the blog will see it, my wall on FB, Darkstar's wall on FB, the KMRL page on FB and the KMRL Twitter account. No MySpace yet because I deleted the old account to make it a music one but that's coming.

It's time to revive the station and bring in the new talent that's been waiting to get on! It's been long enough and Summer break is way way over.

We want your input, we'd like to know the sort of stuff you would want to hear on KMRL so we've made a poll just for you.

One quick click over the the station home page and the poll is right there asking what sort of programming would get you to turn us on and give us your time.

It really will only take 10 seconds and we do appreciate your input. We want to make the station all about you with us just the dancing monkeys!

So tell a friend about KMRL, give the shows a listen and go take the poll!! Thank you!

Ch-ch-changes!

There's been a lot happening around here since the beginning of the year as we broadcast our good radio mojo into 2008! But with the good comes the bad. We all send our heartfelt wishes for quick healing to both WebKittyn and her father who are both fighting their own health related battles right now. We're hoping and praying they both have a speedy and full recovery.

The debut of a new show at KMRL has made Thursday nights even more fun! Momma Bug has joined us with her awesome new show called Exit 34! It airs live, every Thursday night from 8PM-9PM EST and you should really check it out! She describes it as "...an eclectic mix of tunes that includes classic jazz, kitschy pop, rock n' roll and more!" You can check out her full show description here and read her talent bio here. Come out and show your support for our newest KMRL DJ!

With the new year comes a little tidying of the site:

-Brand-spankin' new linkback buttons complete with codes for easy snag.

-Updated show and talent pages with the latest additions.

-Various copy updates throughout the site.

-New front page format to keep you up to date on all things Mojo and get listener feedback with our new poll feature.

And finally don't forget that Valentine's Day is just around the corner and the KRML Gift Shop has some perfect gift ideas for your special someone!

Forums!

Hey, guys. Just a reminder to check out the forums! I’m going to be posting a contest in the contests section, and also check out my rants in The Bitching Corner. I try and post a new essay there each week(ish...give or take).
