Olympian Fantasies
With the rising tide of Olympic fever sweeping across these blighted isles, I find myself swept into a stagnant pool of ennui. I find it difficult to care, really. But, for a lack of any better ideas, that’s what tonight’s show will be about.
I’ll discuss the vast differences between the original Olympics 2,500 years ago and this over-sponsored corporate spectacle of psuedo-excellence, political posturing and blatantly fake comradeship. FFS, Boris Johnson is like an evil version of Gary Bussey who’s actually being taken seriously, David Cameron gave Olympic security to a private firm that donated to his campaign and then wonders why they screwed everything up by paying more attention to profits than security, and let’s be honest, if any of these athletes actually ate lunch at McD’s (as some have insinuated in the commercials), their main competition would be racing from the couch to the toilet.
On top of all the propaganda, for some reason the Brits seem convinced that they’ll actually be the first country to host the Olympics that won’t find themselves sunk into an economic abyss afterward. Considering that the economy is already sinking steadily here, that worries me as well.
I’ll also be discussing those few athletes, like Usain Bolt, who actually seem to defy the laws of physics and human physiology by doing things previously thought to be impossible.
Oh, and did I mention I’ll also be playing great music from across decades and genres, so it all won’t be completely depressing!
