Screaming Passions and Foreign Delights
Tonight, more music from unexpected sources. It fascinates me that there are musicians who have, objectively, horrible voices, yet their passion is such that they are incredible (think about Janis Joplin, or even Johnny Cash right before he died). One of my favorites is Vladimir Vysotsky, a Russian singer who most people in the west have never heard of... perhaps 'cause he only sang in Russian, but he's so passionate that you don't need to understand the words to be moved by them (though the lyrics are awesome as well, including: "Approaching the chasm, at the edge of the abyss, I lash the horses, driving them on. I can't breathe, I drink the wind, I swallow the fog, and I smell with deadly ecstacy that I am dying.")
That leads me to the many phenomenal musicians whose primary language isn't English, and so don't get the acknowledgment they deserve. There are some crossovers (Shakira, Richie Valens) but for the most part they have to sing in English to get anywhere, so I'll be playing some stuff you may have never heard of. Laibach (though, now that they perform in English, they're well recognized), Molotov (one of my fave Mexican rock bands) and a few others. Throw in some 70's Funk, 80's New Wave, 90's Industrial/Electronic and at least one band from Brighton that I'll lay odds you've never heard before, and you've got two hours of fun!
But that's not all...
