Songs of Rage and Regret
So many people seem to be cashing in on the 9-11 anniversary that I was going to completely ignore it on general principle. But as the days have passed and the anniversary approached, I realized that I cannot do that.I grew up with those towers. When I was a kid they were the tallest buildings on earth. They were somehow magical...
When I was really young and broke, I would take girls on dates on the Staten Island Ferry because the return trip was amazing. The city would appear as something out of a fairy tale, with the two glittering towers on the edge of a magical kingdom. I never got over, or got used to that view. The city skyline always took my breath away, and the towers were an integral part of that.
When they went down ten years ago, they took some of my childhood with them, and over the last ten years the shocks have increased exponentially. Two years and one month later another blow. One year and twelve days after that the world ended and the dream started. Since then the dream has become a nightmare with no end in sight.
So, besides the personal reasons, there are political and economic reasons for my viewing this anniversary with dread. I don't like what's become of my country or the world. I detest the hypocrisy of using the anniversary to battle atrocity with atrocity. Shit, I even detest (some of) the "9-11 Families" who've managed to cash in on death and destruction. So if you're expecting another maudlin, we're all in this together anniversary show you've come to the wrong place. If you want to hear the views of a native NYer, who also happens to be a veteran, then come on down! If you disagree with me, think I've become soft or too liberal or whatever, then listen and come into the Chat Room and tell me why you think I'm wrong - I'll debate you live on the air!
So tonight I won't be playing much happy music. I'll be playing music full of rage, despair, sorrow and indignation. Nick Cave, Mano Negra, Ministry, Serj Tankian, Molotov, Muse, Johnny Cash, just to name a few. In between I'll be ranting about the state of the world. Listen to KMRL Mojo Radio Live at 6pm Eastern in the US, 11pm in the UK and Midnight in Western Europe and while you're at it, come in to the Chat Room to let me know what you think.
