Cross posted from my blog. If I could make this a sticky, I would. It’s a rather long entry, but it definitely deserves your attention.
I know this is short notice but my mom alerted me to this and unfortunately I can’t go protest with her. On 17 March 2007, war veterans are gathering to protect the Vietnam Wall, WWII, WWI, Korean, etc. from protesters who want to deface (spray paint, hang signs, etc.) on the Wall and other tributes. As one veteran so bluntly put it:
It is NOT about politics, it is about honoring their sacrifice.
It is NOT about whether this nation should not have gone to Viet Nam, or should have stayed longer and done more.
It is NOT about the personalities and controversies of those days, or any other days.
Everyone should understand that the remembrance and honor we give to those who didn’t come back is about THEM, and nothing else. If my brother or my son was in the antiwar movement, I would respect his convictions and support his right to protest, but I would tell him “Leave The Wall out of it. Don’t go there, don’t even think of going there.” And if the same person was rabidly supportive of our actions in Iraq and Afghanistan and wanted to paste a poster across The Wall saying “Support The Troops”, I would say the same thing. Leave The Wall out of it.
I agree with them, the people protecting the wall. I really believe that veterans should be honoured. I have opinions on the Vietnam War but that’s not the point. The point is that these veterans who so valiantly fought for freedom; the Vietnam veterans, the ones who were OSTRACIZED by craven teenagers, are being ignored. Their work is trivialised from the tarnishing left AND right. I have issues with the War now, but I’ll be damned before I criticise the people who drafted to get involved in something I’m not brave enough to. (Then again, I’m a gimp, but let’s leave that out of this). So, I ask that you cross post, pimp, and plug this event as much as possible. I can’t go due to OGT (Ohio Graduation Test) testing but if you are able, GO! I linked the event’s official blog and a list of people who are going. Pimp or go! This needs your support!
